1.2: Design Templates
The design of a site is contained within the templates that are applied to various content elements.
Consistent Design - The use of templates allows for the creation of a consistent navigation and presentation for a website.
Building-block Designs - Templates cover both the overall page of a site, and elements of the content within that page. Each page has a template that determines the layout of navigation, pictures, colours, and content, creating the overall design of the website. Within that page are several smaller ‘building-blocks’, which are in turn content elements with a template applied (e.g. User information with a design template applied to display the various elements of that user’s information, such as name and address).
Efficient Design Process - The use of templates allows for the efficient creation of additional site pages. By taking any piece of new content and applying an existing template, it removes the need of the author to concern themselves with how that information will fit with existing content. Additionally the simple change of one template document allows for a global change to all pages of the website using that template, allowing for the rapid delivery of a new branding, or even just a revamp of an existing design to better fit with changing company needs.
Content Lists - With the use of templates, a list of content items (e.g. products or users) can be displayed on a page with a consistent layout for each item. The list can be preconfigured (e.g. product catalogue), or determined dynamically from a set of criteria (e.g. search engine results).
Variable Substitution - The Templates define which content variables are to be displayed, and how they are formatted. This allows for specific positioning of elements, and the ability to use various formatting options such as changing fonts or text colour.
