3 - 3rd Party Technology

3.1: PHP

PHP is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language, which is especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML. It is developed from C++ and perl, and has become the most popular web scripting language globally. PHP fully supports object oriented programming which Tornado employs for all programming tasks. PHP is a project of the Apache Software Foundation.

3.2: MySQL

The world’s most popular open source database, MySQL supports standard SQL and is a robust and proven database engine. Available in both Linux and Windows versions, it caters to a CMS perfectly.

3.3: Apache

The Apache web-server is the world’s most popular web-server, which like MySQL is an open source project. Apache has been the most popular web server on the Internet since April of 1996. The August 2002 Netcraft Web Server Survey found that 63% of the web sites on the Internet are using Apache, thus making it more widely used than all other web servers combined.

3.4: Internet Explorer

While Tornado CMS will operate fully on other browsers, we test our code comprehensively on Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 5.5. For administering websites online, we recommend IE as our browser of choice.

3.5: Flash

When it comes to animation, flash is at the top of the stack. With its powerful vector based graphics rendering, and a scripting language to help drive dynamic content, flash is a tool with great value. The overall times required for loading content can be greatly reduced with flash by only loading the content required, and not all the extra formatting required in HTML. The graphical interface also allows for powerful editors to be built giving the content authors even more tools to give them control.

3.6: Javascript

A client-side scripting language, Javascript allows for dynamic content alterations. Pop-up menus, image rollovers, scrolling text, and many other features can be achieved with Javascript. Modern browsers all fully support Javascript functions, making it a strong contender for cross platform development.
