1.8: Data Backup
Whether it be due to a code bug, malicious attack, server meltdown, or even just a mistake gone out of hand, data loss can happen, sometimes causing irreparable damage to a site. When things do go awry, a good backup system will allow for the rapid and safe recovery of that data.
Data Safety - A complete snapshot of the entire content of a website can be downloaded and stored in an independent encrypted file for storage offsite. This ensures that any data loss can at least be restored to a previous working condition. While some data may be lost between the time of the backup and the current time, it prevents the need of starting entirely from the beginning.
Data Purge - A CMS will eventually slow down or become cluttered due to excessive old data, which is no longer needed for the site. This data, once stored in a backup file, can be removed from the active system to ensure optimum efficiency whilst still maintaining a full history of the website content. Any deleted content (or content over a specified age) can automatically be purged after a content backup to remove the need for administering this process.
